Have you seen this post in your Facebook feed? It comes up in mine All. The. Time. It’s pure torture.
Every week or so during the winter, we declare a Donut Day around here. I walk into the bakery and if there’s one thing I want to buy, it’s maple bars. Too often, they don’t have them. On the other hand, too often they do, but they filled them with that nasty creme. I mean, I have come to spend calories, but not that many.
The idea that I could make maple bars at home in 15 minutes — well, that is pure danger, because there’s nobody around here to help me eat them up.
But I finally tried it. I thought it would be a scene of oil flying all over the kitchen. But the trying was easy and gentle. The maple frosting made the house smell divine. And I have never eaten so many maple bars in one day, but I’m not sorry.
I’m already full of ideas about next time:
- Fry a few seconds less
- Try with frozen bread dough or, even better, make up some Navajo fry bread.
- Invite grandkids. This project definitely qualifies for Baking for Family Fun Month.
I used to buy a maple bar every day for lunch when I went to Washington Jr. High. They had no school lunch.
Yes, a maple bar and a small package of potato chips.
